Installing drum wrap is one of the best ways to restore vintage drums or customize your kit. This guide explains how to measure drum wrap, calculate wrap size, and install wrap properly for professional results.
At Bum Wrap Drum Co., we supply high-quality drum wrap materials and provide the information you need to get perfect results.
To determine the correct wrap length you must calculate the circumference of the drum shell.
The formula is:
Circumference = Diameter × 3.14
Example:
22" Bass Drum
22 × 3.14 = 69.08 inches
Always add:
• 1.5 inches extra length (for trimming and seam overlap)
• ½ inch extra depth each end (for trimming flush with bearing edges)
The industry standard adhesive for drum wrap installation is:
3M 30-NF Fastbond Contact Adhesive
Benefits:
• Strong professional bond
• Flexible after curing
• Resistant to heat and humidity
• Used by professional drum builders
One quart will typically cover an entire five piece drum kit.
Using other adhesives may lead to lifting seams or poor adhesion.
For best results follow these steps:
Remove all hardware from the drum shell
Remove old wrap and adhesive
Clean the shell completely
Allow shell to dry 24 hours if chemical stripper was used
Apply adhesive to both shell and wrap
Allow adhesive to tack before applying
Roll wrap onto shell slowly to avoid bubbles
Trim excess wrap at bearing edges
Taking your time during installation will produce factory-quality results.
Drum wrap materials are produced in manufacturing batches. Because of this:
• Colors may vary slightly between runs
• Patterns like sparkle or pearl may shift
If color match is critical, order all wraps at the same time.
Drums larger than 16 inches in diameter may require multiple wrap pieces depending on sheet size.
Most wraps are cut so seams are placed near the bottom of the drum shell where they are less visible.
Some wrap finishes require extra care.
Glass Glitter Wrap
• Extremely brittle
• Can crack if bent sharply
• Handle slowly during installation
Additionally, avoid storing drums in direct sunlight for extended periods to prevent shrinking.
Most drum wrap orders ship within 1–2 business days when material is in stock.
When your wrap arrives:
• Unroll it
• Lay it flat
• Allow it to relax before installation
To make measuring easier we created a free printable drum wrap sizing chart.
This chart includes common drum sizes and recommended wrap lengths + overlap and trim needed to make your cuts.
